BULAWAYO - Zimbabwe is now on a road to recovery albeit with baby strides but ZANU PF's recent show of stabborness threatens the survival of the government of national unity. Writes Simba Nembaware
The Mugabe led party has embarked on another farm invasion crusade that has cast further doubt on the seriousness of the aged leader to fully participate in democratic reforms that will usher in aid from the west. Part of terms set by western donors is the return to rule of law and the upholding of human rights but ZANU PF continues to trample on these.
Zimbabwe is in this mess because of the unplanned land reform that Mugabe embarked on at the turn of the century in his diabolic bid to retain power by appeasing his scavenging hounds in the form of war veterans, a band of militants led by the late charismatic Chenjerai, the foul mouthed Joseph Chinotimba and the scheming Jabulani Sibanda
Mugabe has refused to swear in Movement for Democratic Change treasurer, Roy Bennet as Deputy Minister for Agriculture. The issue of provincial governors is still in limbo while that of the Central Bank governor will not be solved meaning the feud between Finance Minister Tendai Biti and Gideon Gono will continue despite it being unhealthy for the economy.
Media reforms now remain a dream as ZANU PF highjacked the Kariba meeting. The re-arrest of Jestina Mukoko and other Zimbabwean human rights activists on spurious charges of terrorism further demostrates how long the road to freedom still is for millions of hopeless Zimbabwe.
